Frequently Asked Questions
-
Cooling and heating account for a large share of energy consumption in modern buildings and industrial facilities.
ChillBank™ is a modular thermal energy storage system developed by Isothermix that stores cooling and heating energy using advanced phase change materials (PCM).
Instead of storing electricity like a lithium battery, ChillBank™ stores energy directly as temperature. This allows cooling energy to be produced when electricity is cheapest and used when demand is highest, improving efficiency and reducing peak electricity demand.
-
In many facilities, cooling represents a significant share of electricity consumption. When the demand is thermal, storing energy directly as cooling is significantly more efficient than storing electricity and converting it later.
Thermal energy storage can reduce peak demand, lower electricity costs and improve overall HVAC system efficiency.
-
ChillBank™ stores thermal energy in sealed modules containing advanced phase change materials.
The system charges when cooling energy is produced, typically during off-peak periods or when renewable electricity is available. When cooling is required, water circulates through integrated heat exchangers within the modules, absorbing the stored thermal energy and delivering it into the chilled water system.
ChillBank™ integrates directly with standard chilled-water HVAC systems using conventional pumps, valves and heat exchangers already familiar to facility engineers.
-
ChillBank™ is designed for facilities with significant cooling demand and predictable energy loads.
Typical applications include data centres, mining operations, commercial buildings, hospitals, industrial facilities and district energy systems. The modular design allows systems to be deployed in plant rooms, containerised units or integrated into existing chilled water infrastructure.
-
Energy capacity depends on the configuration of the system. Individual modules can be combined to deliver systems ranging from tens of kilowatt-hours through to multi-megawatt-hour installations.
The modular design allows ChillBank™ systems to scale from smaller commercial installations to large industrial and precinct-scale deployments.
-
ChillBank™ uses latent heat storage through advanced phase change materials. During the phase change process, large amounts of thermal energy can be absorbed or released within a relatively small volume.
This allows ChillBank™ to store significantly more cooling energy per cubic metre than traditional chilled water storage systems, enabling a much smaller footprint and easier integration into buildings and industrial sites.
-
ChillBank™ operates alongside standard chilled-water HVAC systems rather than replacing them. If the system is offline for maintenance or unavailable, the primary cooling equipment such as chillers continues to operate normally.
This means ChillBank™ functions as an additional layer of energy storage and load management rather than a single point of failure, ensuring continuity for critical cooling infrastructure.
